Meet the Pastor

Bill Johnson, Associate Pastor. Bill (or BJ, as he is known by many) helps out in many ways throughout the life of Memorial Baptist Church. He regularly teaches in adult education, plays guitar and sings with the LifeLine worship team, sings in the adult choir, leads two Wednesday night dinner teams, is a regular with ASPAN meal preparation, and has been seen taking a few (thousand) pictures. Bill also lives out his gifts and call at his full-time job with Faith At Work since 1994. A graduate of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in San Francisco, Bill and his family initially came to Memorial in 1992 as associate pastor, with music and education as his primary focuses. E-mail BJ here.

Katie McKown, Assistant Pastor. Katie was called as assistant pastor of Memorial Baptist Church in May 2006 and began her ministry in August 2006.  Katie serves as youth pastor, helps coordinate children's and young adult activities, and has preaching and pastoral responsibilities.  Katie graduated from Georgetown College in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in elementary education and minoring in religion. In May of 2006, Katie graduated from Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity Degree.  Katie enjoys reading and traveling. With roots in the Bluegrass State, she loves the St. Louis Cardinals and University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball (though she is learning to love the Nationals).  Katie is also an avid Scrabble player, loves theater and movies, thoughtful conversations over coffee, and is learning to embrace yardwork. E-mail Katie here.

Pamela Chisholm, Assistant Pastor. Pam began her ministry with Memorial Baptist Church September 2007, after working with the Church as a Ministry Intern since October 2006. She graduated from the John Leland Center for Theological Studies having completed the Master of Divinity degree. Pam graduated from the University of Maryland, University College (Go Terrapins!) with a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems. She is Jamaican-born and loves tennis. She currently works for the Federal Government in Washington DC. E-mail Pam here.

Richard Buerkle, Assistant Pastor of Music and Outreach. A native of Texas, Richard joined the Memorial staff in August, 2007. Richard graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Church Music degree and from Truett Baptist Theological Seminary with a Masters of Divinity. He has served previously at Beverly Hills Baptist Church in Waco, Texas and First Baptist Church of Gatesville, Texas. When not singing or playing the piano, or sitting at his desk, or drinking coffee, he likes to be outdoors playing sports, canoeing, climbing, camping, or hanging out in the local coffee shops and bookstores. He also enjoys a good home improvement project and working on mission trips. He says he's never met a power tool he didn't like except a saw-zaw. Richard is thrilled to be here at Memorial and excited about the new challenges and great possibilites of life in DC! E-mail Richard here.

Ann BrownAnn Brown, Organist. Ann and her husband have retired from a long and satisfying career in the Air Force, during which she was fortunate to have been able to serve the Lord through music in churches (especially Air Force chapels) literally around the country and all over the world -- and they in turn were blessed by her tremendous talent, servant’s heart, and abiding faith. Ann is accomplished in all styles of traditional, classical, and contemporary worship music, yet the most important factor for her in the music of the church is that it is pleasing to God and ministers to the congregation. Her constant prayer is that God will truly be glorified in every note she plays. E-mail Ann here.

Brad Niesen, Pianist. Brad is a retired Coast Guard officer and the owner of a small government services company in Arlington. He has played keyboard in a variety of secular and ministry-oriented groups and enjoys sharing his music appreciation with worshipers of all ages. Brad’s faith journey began in 1977 and he is active in many facets of Memorial’s church life. He and his wife, Jane, have lived in Arlington since 1990 and have attended Memorial since 2003. E-mail Brad here.

Artemia Tamayo, Church Administrator. After working in a shared position with the Northern Virginia Baptist association, NorthStar Church Network, Artemia joined the Memorial staff full-time in September of 2007. Artemia is a graduate from the University of Maryland, College Park in Spanish with a minor in Business Administration. Artemia enjoys a good walk down the streets of Arlington with her buddy Katie, but she especially enjoys volunteering for all types of ministry opportunities including the Emanuel Baptist Church, Hispanic Congregation, where her father has pastored since 1998. She feels blessed to see so many ministries at work in Memorial and rejoices working along side each one of the church members. E-mail Artemia here.

Ruben Hernandez, Caretaker. Ruben is a critical part of life and work at Memorial Baptist Church. In addition to his outstanding engineering and maintenance skills, he is a man of great faith with a stirring personal testimony in Jesus Christ. We are privileged that he and his lovely family -- wife Rocio and children Yessennia and Santiago -- make Memorial Baptist their church home. E-mail Ruben here.

Sally Wodatch, Children's Ministry Director. Sally grew up at Memorial Baptist Church into a young woman of great faith and desire to serve the Lord, Jesus Christ. Sally is a Virginia Commonwealth University graduate with a degree in criminal justice and religious studies.
